A True Wilderness Exploration into the Least-Visited Region of Bhutan
Important Note on the Trail
The Manas Trek route has remained largely unused for more than five years. This is a true expedition through a recovering wilderness. Several sections of the ancient trail and bridges have been washed away, and parts of the route may require passing through dense undergrowth. To ensure a safe and sustainable journey, local guides and trail-clearers will accompany us. This adventure embraces the raw, unfiltered beauty of Bhutan’s subtropical south—ideal for trekkers seeking a rare and authentic exploration.
Driving: Approx. 8–9 hours (295 km)
Altitude: Thimphu 2,300m → Gomphu (subtropical lowlands)
We begin the Manas Expedition with an early morning departure from Thimphu. Our first highlight is Dochula Pass (3,100m), offering a breathtaking 360° view of the Eastern Himalayas on clear days. We descend into the warm central valley, stopping for lunch overlooking the serene Mangdechhu River.
The afternoon drive reveals a dramatic shift in ecosystem—from temperate pine and oak forests to dense subtropical jungles rich with wildlife. Keep a lookout for golden langurs, hornbills, macaques, and vibrant clusters of butterflies along the way.
We reach Gomphu Campsite by evening, where tents are prepared and a warm welcome drink awaits. Spend your first night immersed in the deep forest ambience.
Accommodation: Gomphu Camp
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Trekking: 4–5 hours
Drive: 25 minutes (Paibang → Pangthang)
The trekking adventure begins today on the traditional and rarely used Manas route. The trail winds through mixed broadleaf forests alive with the sounds of the subtropics. This region is known as a birdwatcher’s paradise—listen for barbets, hornbills, bulbuls, woodpeckers, and cuckoos.
Due to a washed-away bridge near Mamung, today’s trek concludes at Paibang, from where a short drive brings us to the peaceful Pangthang Eco Lodge.
Spend the evening relaxing on the balcony overlooking the forest canopy, recounting the day’s discoveries.
Accommodation: Pangthang Eco Lodge

Trekking: 4-5 hours
Today’s trail follows the right bank of the Mangdechhu River, offering wonderful views of Pangthang and the river valley behind you. The route includes gentle ups and downs before a final 30-minute ascent to reach Shilingtoe Eco-Camp.
This valley is exceptionally rich in birdlife—drongos, thrushes, partridges, pheasants, and soaring eagles are commonly sighted. Upon arrival, optional activities include:
A short trek to the Bat Caves or Limestone Caves
Birding walks around the eco-camp
Note: If old trails are overgrown, we will take the feeder road from Pangthang to Shilingtoe.

Trekking: 3–4 hours to Changazam
Drive: Short drive to Pangbang

The trail passes key landmarks, such as:
A sacred religious cave used by local hermits
The spectacular twin waterfalls of Lelang, cascading dramatically into the forest
Cross the iconic Changazam Suspension Bridge, after which a short drive brings us to Pangbang Campsite at Anilademba, located at the confluence of the Mangdechhu and Dangmechhu Rivers. This area marks Bhutan’s connection to the famed Indian Manas Tiger Reserve.
